Fuori: a celebration of Goliarda Sapienza by Mario Martone

Three years after Nostalgia (2022), adapted from Ermanno Rea’s novel by the same name, the Neapolitan director, Mario Martone repeats this achievement with Fuori, celebrating the fierce writer Goliarda Sapienza. Freely inspired by her autobiographical tale L’Università di Rebibbia (The University of Rebibbia), this film presented in Competition, takes place in the 1980s and tells the story of the author’s cathartic prison stay in L’arte della gioia (The Art of Joy), brilliantly portrayed by Valeria Golino.

In her tale L’Università di Rebibbia (The University of Rebibbia), published in 1983, Goliarda Sapienza returns to the few months she spent in prison after stealing jewelry. The rebellious author intimately and devoid of any judgement describes the reality of her incarceration, passionately portraying a female microcosm imbued with solidarity and pain. The Italian experiences this “university” prison as a place of existential learning.

To portray the author of the impressive work L’arte della gioia (The Art of Joy), written between 1967 and 1976, but published posthumously, Mario Martone has chosen Valeria Golino. Given that she directed the TV series L’arte della gioia (The Art of Joy), which was selected in 2024, this choice was almost self-evident. The actor and director commented:

“Goliarda does not listen to anyone and has a unique style, which is not to everyone’s liking. Her writing is very graceful and multi-layered, she is blessed with an incredible range.”

She is supported by Elodie Di Patrizi, known as Elodie, a young Italian singer and actor who is among the most promising and talented of her generation and Matilda De Angelis, who plays the role of Roberta, a delinquent and political activist who helps the author to rediscover her joie de vivre and desire to write.
